On the morning of August 21, the School of Civil Engineering held the opening ceremony for the "Structures and Geometry" International Summer School and the appointment ceremony for Professor Choong Kok Keong as a Guest Professor of Southeast University. Distinguished guests attending the event included Mr. Chen Wang, Deputy Director of the SEU International Cooperation Office; Mr. Dinghua Tang, Deputy Party Secretary (Presiding) of the School of Civil Engineering; Professor Jianguo Cai, Assistant Dean; Professor SeungDeog Kim; as well as Professor Zhong You from the University of Oxford, Professor Kok Keong Choong from the University of Science, Malaysia, Professor Daniel S-H Lee from the Royal Danish Academy, Professor Ruy Marcelo de Oliveira Pauletti and Professor Leila Cristina Meneghetti Valverdes from the University of São Paulo, and Professor Namseok Kim from Kyonggi University. Additionally, approximately 100 students participated in the opening ceremony, representing institutions such as the Royal Danish Academy, ETH Zurich, the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Seoul National University, the University of São Paulo, and Southeast University. The ceremony was chaired by Professor Jianguo Cai.

At the outset, Deputy Director Chen Wang delivered an address. On behalf of the SEU International Cooperation Office, he congratulated the successful opening of the International Summer School and extended a warm welcome to students from around the world. He emphasized that the summer school, leveraging SEU's strategic partnerships with renowned universities across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, would provide students with a valuable platform for learning and exchange. He sincerely wished all participants a rewarding experience filled with the joy of academic exploration and the charm of cultural integration in the historic city of Nanjing.

Following this, Mr. Dinghua Tang delivered a speech. He briefly introduced the school and highlighted the importance of strengthening international exchanges for disciplinary development, talent cultivation, and scientific research. He noted that the International Summer School provides an interdisciplinary innovation platform for students from China and abroad at the intersection of engineering and design. He expressed his hope that all participants would gain valuable knowledge, forge lasting friendships, and wished the International Summer School great success.

Faculty representatives Professor Daniel S-H Lee and Professor Ruy Marcelo de Oliveira Pauletti each delivered addresses. They expressed their gratitude to SEU for hosting the International Summer School and conveyed high expectations for the event. They encouraged students to fully utilize this platform for interaction and exchange, broadening their perspectives and enhancing mutual understanding in a cross-cultural environment.

Student representatives, Ms. Julia Heidi Katariina Ristola from Denmark and Ms. Xiaojing Chen from China, took the stage to speak. They both expressed their delight and anticipation for participating in the International Summer School, hoping to deepen their professional knowledge, enhance mutual exchanges, and build lasting friendships through the upcoming lectures and cultural activities.

A key part of the ceremony was the appointment of Professor Kok Keong Choong as aGuest Professor. Professor SeungDeog Kim introduced Professor Choong's academic achievements, noting that he is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Science, Malaysia, with research expertise in earthquake engineering, nonlinear structural analysis, and spatial structure design. Since 2015, Professor Choong has visited SEU's School of Civil Engineering multiple times, actively participating in academic activities and establishing a strong cooperative relationship with the school.

Following the introduction, Deputy Director Chen Wang and Mr. Dinghua Tang jointly presented Professor Choong with his SEU Guest Professor appointment certificate and pinned the university badge on him. In his subsequent remarks, Professor Choong expressed sincere gratitude for the appointment and highly praised the strong academic standing and vibrant international atmosphere of the School of Civil Engineering. He stated that being appointed as a Guest Professor was not only an honor but also a responsibility, and he would further deepen research collaboration and academic exchanges with the school's faculty and students, contributing to the advancement of relevant fields.

Following the appointment ceremony, Professor Choong delivered an academic report titled "A Look into Spatial Structures in Malaysia." Drawing on his years of research, he systematically introduced the latest developments in the field of spatial structures in Malaysia, greatly inspiring the attending faculty and students.
