From July 18 to 20, the 2nd International Symposium on Urban Lifeline (ISUL 2025) was successfully held in Saitama, Japan. The symposium was jointly organized by Southeast University, Saitama University (Japan), and the international journal Urban Lifeline.

At the opening of the symposium, Professor Zhiqiang Su, Distinguished Professor of Southeast University and Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore (Co-Editor-in-Chief of Urban Lifeline), delivered an enthusiastic welcome address.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Ji Dang (Saitama University), Chair of the Organizing Committee.

The symposium focused on academic discussions addressing the challenges and opportunities facing urban lifelines. Renowned international scholars were invited to deliver keynote speeches, including Professor Pang-Jo Chun and Professor Tomonori Nagayama from the University of Tokyo (Japan), and Professor Rehan Sadiq, Vice Principal of the University of British Columbia (Okanagan), Canada. Over 100 representatives from 36 universities, research institutions, and high-tech enterprises across countries including China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan, the United States, Canada, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Thailand, and Pakistan attended the conference. A total of 69 oral presentations shared cutting-edge theories and innovative technologies in urban lifeline engineering and related disciplines.

The Scientific Committee selected five Best Papers from the 70 submitted conference papers and presented awards to the representative authors.

During the symposium, the Editorial Board Meeting of the Urban Lifeline journal was held, and the "2024 Best Paper Award" of the journal was presented. The winning paper, titled "Rescue guiders layout study based on a two-layer optimization framework," was co-authored by Dr. Ke Wang, Professor Weifeng Yuan, and Professor Yao Yao. The award was presented by Professor Zhiqiang Chen (University of Missouri, USA), Chair of the Selection Committee. The journal also recognized four Outstanding Young Editorial Board Members for 2024. The award was presented to representative recipient Dr. Xinhao He, Assistant Professor at Tohoku University, Japan, by Professor Zhiqiang Su, Editor-in-Chief.

The International Symposium on Urban Lifeline was initiated by Southeast University and the Urban Lifeline journal. Its aim is to foster collaboration and exchange among scholars and experts in the urban lifeline field, jointly promoting the intelligent, resilient, and sustainable development of urban lifelines globally. Building on the success of the inaugural conference held in Nanjing in 2024, the second symposium was held overseas, further expanding the international influence of Southeast University and the journal. To continue promoting academic exchange and interaction, the third symposium is planned to be held in Nanjing in July 2026.
