From April 1 to 3, 2022, the 2022 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference was successfully held by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at the University of California, Davis. The competition attracted renowned universities, including the University of California, Berkeley and Davis campuses, Southeast University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University, Dalian University of Technology, and Hohai University. Notably, Chinese universities participated in the competition through online presentations. The participating team of school of civil engineering, consisting of Dong Mingyang and Lin Xiaochuan from the 2020 Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering major, Duan Tianle from the 2019 Engineering Management major, and Pan Junwei and Zheng Xiaofeng (team leader) from the 2019 Civil Engineering major, collectively participated in the Sustainable Solutions Competition. Following the online presentation and subsequent evaluation sessions, the project team achieved a historic second-place victory in the Mid-Pacific Sustainable Solutions Competition.
This Sustainable Solutions Competition focuses on regional planning and design for people without a fixed residence in urban areas. Faced with this new challenge, under the careful guidance of teachers such as Tan Chaoqun, Ma Jinxia, Xu Yan, Yao Yiming, and Southeast University alumnus Zhou Zhou, the competition team began preparations in late November, 2021. After repeated discussions and refinements, they developed a low-carbon regional design featuring intensive land use, clean energy transformation, and community energy conservation and emission reduction. The competition defense took place online at 5:30 a.m. Beijing time on April 1. The Southeast University team was the second to present the design concepts and details of the project to the panel of judges, receiving full recognition. During the defense, all team members remained calm, and the judges highly praised the proposed solution.

In the past five years, our students have consistently achieved outstanding results in team competitions. In 2018, they secured the first place overall, as well as first places in the structure, rigidity, and presentation categories in the Steel Bridge Competition. In 2019, they won the runner-up position in the Southeast Region Water Treatment Competition. In 2020, they became official members of the ASCE Student Competition. In 2021, they earned the third place in the Sustainable Solutions Competition in the Mid-Pacific Region. For the 2022 competition, from intensive pre-competition preparations to the splendid on-site presentation, the outstanding performance of our students once again exemplifies the spirit of Pursuit of Excellence on the international stage. This success not only tests students' professional knowledge and enhances their practical skills, but also explores a new path for multi-disciplinary collaborative competitions and strengthens international exchange and cooperation. Through these efforts, our university is demonstrating a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, cultivating innovative talents in civil engineering with a sense of national pride and an international perspective.
